Tony and Olgo Russo's grandfather started the family business on farmland in Watertown just a couple of miles away from the present store: near the Rosary Academy on Lexington Street. "We stayed there until we moved in here around 1990", Tony says. "Our grandfather farmed the small farm he had there on Lexington Street until the mid-fifties. We mostly grew tomatoes, lettuce and beans."
Today, the former fruit stand has become a village of its own, with a huge warehouse where trucks line up at a long row of bays, Quote from Tony Russoready to deliver the freshest produce to the finest restaurants in town; to hotels, bakeries, retail outlets, hospitals, and even the Boston Zoo; with greenhouses, a full kitchen, a bakery, a florist, and greater Boston's best selection of ethnic and familiar produce items from all over the world .
The trucks were loaded overnight: the order desk at Russo's never closes. And when the deliveries have left, the retail store opens, at 8 in the morning, seven days a week.
Before you even enter the store proper, you pass through a virtual outdoor market filled with bins upon bins of potatoes, onions, cabbages, carrots, squashes, apples, pears, melons; with potted plants, cut flowers, coolers with freshly pressed apple cider - it's easy to fill your cart before you've even started to shop!
