In the 1950's Bob and Jewell Hickman had a comfortable life with their 5 sons in Jefferson City, Mo. Bob had been a meat cutter for the Kroger Company for a number of years...but he also had a dream...
he wanted to own his own store.
Bob learned of a small store in Perry, Mo that was for sale. After looking at the store and assessing the possibilities for success, Bob and Jewell decided the time was right to pursue their dream.
In March of 1959, they loaded up a rented truck and moved to Perry with their young sons. Quite a bold move to uproot your family and "risk it all".
Those early years were a learning but rewarding experience. There was lots of room for improvement and improve he did, a new floor was added to the old building, cases replaced and air conditioning, considered a luxury at the time, was also added. Bob believed in keeping up with the times.
Fast forward to 1968...Bob's son's began to assume more responsibility
in the day to day operation of the store. In 1981, Bob's third son, Jim, purchased 2 stores of his own in Mexico, Mo. In the late 80's,
four of the son's bought out their Dad and he settled into a much deserved retirement.
Since that time, the company, headed by President, Jim Hickman, has
grown to a 6 store regional chain, serving Northeast Central Missouri. Updating and modernizing have been the rule of thumb over the years, echoing the advice of their father..."You have to change with the times.
